The Shadow that Follows You - Trauma

It’s with you all the time. Even when you think you’re alone, you turn to see your trauma beside you, waiting to engulf you again. Sometimes, the repercussions of a traumatic event can be as bad as the event itself. You might find yourself acting out, feeling 'frozen' or 'numb', paralysed with fear, blinded by rage, experiencing flashbacks or unable to trust anyone anymore. Sometimes it’s more subtle – but you know things aren’t right. Some of us don’t even realise we have been through trauma. Trauma is something that happens to other people. Moving Forward


“Trauma” comes from the Greek word traumatikos meaning “wound”. Sometimes to heal our wounds we need to forgive others, or ourselves, to be able to move forward. Other times, we need to accept what life has thrown at us and find new ways to bring joy to our present reality. Or, we just need someone to listen so we can process everything that we‘ve been through.


Therapy can help by getting you to take a stop back – get a different perspective on what’s happened. We can look at the emotions that are underlying your trauma, acknowledge them, see that your responses are normal, and celebrate the strengths you’ve demonstrated in dealing with this so far. Then, by focusing on your personal values, and realising you have the courage to move forward, you’ll find your path again. The past happened. We can’t change that. But you WILL get through this and be your best possible self again.


In therapy, the approach we apply will be totally dependent on what will work best for you. We have trauma therapy in Sydney, or online - so you can decide what is most convenient and comfortable for you.


If you are living with trauma, I strongly encourage you to seek help from a therapist you trust. You didn't deserve the trauma, and you definitely don't deserve to still be affected by it.
